2011 - FILLING IN THE GAPS

We have had 10 years of major summer cruises. For a variety of reasons, we decided to stay closer to home in the Channel this year. We started with a Spring Cruise to Cherbourg and St Vaast. Very successful. I still hankered after visiting the Minquiers,  the Ecrehous, and going back to Chausey. These fascinating challenges are on our doorstep!...…

In early June the forecasters seemed optimistic that the weather was improving. Foolishly we believed them. A brief account of the cruise is available from the menu on  the right

In July we went on a cruise with Hurtigruten up the Norwegian fjords and visited Svalbard. That is described in the Epic Trips section.

After the Rustler Dinner and rally on the Isle of Wight, we had hoped to get a couple of weeks to visit the smaller islands off the Cherbourg peninsular - such as Chausey, the Ecrehous, and perhaps even the Minqiuers. However, our diary had become a bit congested, and we hit the biggest tides of the year - a massive 40 ft range at St Malo, so our cruise was limited to six days only reaching Alderney. Despite that, we found one of the few warm periods with benign winds in the otherwise dire summer of 2011.

There is a short video of the trip accessible from the menu on the right

The 2011 Summer Flickr set   includes images from all the events, and some other images from both sailing and non sailing activities.
