Until Recently I have always used Windows Media Player for playback of video clips. But when I obtained a new Windows 8 computer, I found it did not like Windows Media Player. Checking in the web revealed this problem was widespread which (at time of writing) Microsoft had not solved

On consulting Dell, I was advised to use a free player called VLC.

Serif suggested that the mpc-hc64 would be better on a 64 bit machine. I now have both, and use both, and have stopped using Windows Media Player altogether (note it does require exchanging the default program to use with video file types)

(Warning! Some of the download sites will try and lumber you with unwanted search bars. Make sure to say ‘NO’ to all additional software offers when downloading)
